Managing Acute Hypoadrenocorticism
نویسنده
چکیده
Global Commentary If the findings are validated in future studies, this alternative therapeutic protocol could become the most appropriate for hypoadrenocorticism. The choice of hydrocortisone is rational and scientifically sound because its equipotent mineralocorticoid and glucocorticoid effects make it well-tailored for addressing the hormonal deficits that constitute the hallmark of Addison disease. Additionally, the glucocorticoid potency of hydrocortisone is limited, thereby decreasing incidence of side effects attributed to excessive glucocorticoid activity.

dogs.Young, female dogs are predisposed. The most common cause of primary hypoadrenocorticism has been proposed to be immune-mediated destruction of all three layers of the adrenal cortex. This results in mineralocorticoid (aldosterone) and glucocorticosteroid (cortisol) deficiency. Patients typically present with a history of waxing and waning or fulminant gastrointestinal (GI) signs or of acute...
متن کاملBasal Serum Cortisol Concentration as a Screening Test for Hypoadrenocorticism in Dogs
BACKGROUND Measurement of basal serum or plasma cortisol concentration is used as a screening test for hypoadrenocorticism in dogs, but is not well characterized. OBJECTIVES To evaluate the sensitivity and specificity of basal serum cortisol to detect hypoadrenocorticism in a population of dogs with a clinical suspicion of hypoadrenocorticism. ANIMALS Four hundred and fifty dogs with nonadr...

Glucocorticoid-deficient hypoadrenocorticism (GDH) with immune-mediated-neutropenia (IMN) and -thrombocytopenia (IMT) were diagnosed in a 3-year-old Labrador retriever dog. Glucocorticoid-deficient hypoadrenocorticism is rare and diagnostically challenging as clinical signs and laboratory abnormalities are often nonspecific. Immune-mediated cytopenias and other autoimmune disorders, as part of ...
متن کاملHypoadrenocorticism in small animals.
The diagnosis and treatment of hypoadrenocorticism can be one of the greatest challenges faced by veterinary practitioners, as Addison's disease may have many faces and many presentations. Although the disease is most often diagnosed in dogs, cats may also suffer from Addison's disease. The practitioner must have a high index of suspicion to make a diagnosis of hypoadrenocorticism. This index o...
متن کاملUse of the Cortisol‐to‐ACTH Ratio for Diagnosis of Primary Hypoadrenocorticism in Dogs
BACKGROUND The ACTH stimulation test is currently required for definitive diagnosis of hypoadrenocorticism. Increased cost of synthetic ACTH (cosyntropin) has prompted a search for alternative diagnostic methods. OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to determine whether a cortisol-to-ACTH ratio (CAR) can be used to differentiate dogs with hypoadrenocorticism from normal dogs and those with...
